English Translations
English translations for western readers
History vs. Romance
To study this era, one must understand the difference between the 3rd-century historical record (Records of the Three Kingdoms) and the 14th-century historical novel (Romance of the Three Kingdoms). While the novel is a literary masterpiece that defined the popular perception of the heroes, it contains significant fictionalization. The records represent the actual history.
I. English Translations of the Novel
San Kuo, or Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The first full, unabridged English translation of the 120-chapter novel. Presented in a literary English style of its era, using the older Wade-Giles romanization system (e.g., 'Ts'ao Ts'ao' for Cao Cao).
While historically significant, it contains some known errors, lacks extensive academic notes, and feels dated to modern readers.
Three Kingdoms: A Historical Novel (Unabridged)
Widely considered the most authoritative and academic English translation. It provides the unabridged 120 chapters using modern Hanyu Pinyin, accompanied by nearly 100 pages of notes (some from the Mao commentary), maps, a character list, and a detailed afterword.
Three Kingdoms: A Historical Novel (Abridged)
A single-volume abridgment containing about a quarter of the full novel, specifically intended to provide a more digestible narrative for students and general readers.
The Three Kingdoms
An unabridged, 3-volume translation aiming for a dynamic and accessible modern prose style. Includes footnotes and a character list.
Less comprehensive in supplementary academic materials than the Roberts edition, and occasionally condenses or paraphrases the original text more freely.
II. The Historical Record in English
Empresses and Consorts
Subtitled 'Selections from Chen Shou's Records of the Three States With Pei Songzhi's Commentary', this is the most notable professional academic translation of the history. However, it is highly partial, containing translations of only three fascicles (5, 34, and 50) focusing on royal women.
